Welcome to the view through the lens of Jay Schlie’s camera. Looking at moments that have been stopped in a split second. Jay’s photography is often based on an adventure, seeing something for the very first time. He will go out on a bike ride in places he has never been and take a few photos, capture the moment with fresh eyes, then move on. Jay very rarely sets up shots or uses photoshop. How you see the photo is how Jay saw it with his eyes.
A lot of Jay’s work is mounted on wood to bring out highlights, character, and overall emotion of the photo. All of his work mounted on wood is a one-off original piece, you cannot replicate the wood. The wood came into play as Jay had found memories of when photos were tactile. Going through stacks of photos, cutting them up, making collages, and creating zines when he was younger influenced his current work. Finding the right photo and matching it to the wood brought back the sense of tactile photos. This pushed both Jay’s eye for photos and creativity with what could be done with the photo and the wood.
Jay grew up just outside of Faribault, MN on a small hobby farm. Once he got his first bike, he was off on adventures. Jay soon got into BMX racing and that led to traveling to new places. Then came the ramps and working with wood for the first time. Building the ramps was an introduction of taking nothing and turning it into something. Thanks to Jay’s parents for allowing him to have ramps. Anyone going between Faribault and Northfield on HWY 3 could see the progress.
This was around the same time that his interest in photography started to take off. Documenting his travels with his bike, the photos start to also expand. Fast forward many years later. Jay has traveled around the country and the world with his bike taking photos. Influenced by where he is riding and what he is seeing for the first time, shows in the aesthetic of his work.
Jay Schlie currently lives in Minneapolis, MN
